About LongHorn Steakhouse
George McKerrow Jr. opened the first LongHorn Steaks Restaurant & Saloon on Peachtree Street in Atlanta on August 10, 1981. Business was slow until a January 1982 snowstorm stranded commuters across the city. The restaurant stayed open with $1 drinks, and many stranded diners became regulars, according to The Takeout.
LongHorn Steakhouse grew across the eastern US through the 1980s and 1990s. Darden Restaurants bought the chain in 2007 and also owns Olive Garden. As of May 31, 2026, Darden reported 639 US LongHorn restaurants in its fiscal 2026 annual report. That total includes 618 company-owned and 21 franchised locations.
